We have, for a long time, done main development on "trunk" and branched for releases. Occasionally, we'd branch for a complicated feature, but merging is painful. When we move to git, we plan to do all development in branches, only merging back to trunk when all tests are green. Thanks for the post. We're about to move to git from subversion as well.
